Excellence or Mediocrity

The beauty of excellence or mediocrity is that these are choices and options. Every single airport or airline can operate without one single Transport Canada finding. Excellence in operations is a choice and not a condition. There are no good reasons that an enterprise should be given findings after an inspection. Clarity in operations accounts for probably 80% of success and happiness. Lack of clarity is more responsible for frustration and underachievement than any other single factor. A safety management system in aviation is a reactive system to data collected, but a proactive to the degree of comprehension of data received. The aviation industry, being airports and airlines regularly collects data for analysis. Data collection does not in itself prevent incidents from occurring unless data is comprehended with initiatives or corrective action plans. If data is not comprehended operations may continue without corrective action plans. Often, data is ignored if the type of incident which this data would generate is without prior exposure. After high publicity and fatal incidents comments for explanation is often this was the first time this type of incident happened, which in itself identifies a lower data comprehension level.  Anything is possible with systems comprehension.
